With August as Rural Broadband Month, it’s only fitting that we celebrate the fact that GVEC.net is a leader in bringing high speed broadband access to the rural areas of South Texas. One of the frequently asked questions we hear is, “Why is GVEC involved with internet?” The answer is that GVEC.net is proactively engaging in bringing Fiber To The Home (FTTH) technology because it is aligned with the Cooperative’s mission to invest in products and services that meet, and work to exceed, our members’ needs. Providing this service is not only valuable to residents, but serves as an important economic development driver.

FTTH is the best technology on the market today in terms of speed and reliability. There are little to no limitations to the amount of data that can be transmitted through fiber optic lines, and that means little to no limitations in terms of what a homeowner or business can do with it for online entertainment, sharing, or business purposes. Fiber is also the groundwork to support an array of additional services to the home as technology evolves. In areas with Fiber infrastructure in place, even if homeowners choose not to take advantage of one of our speed plans, they will still have convenient access to future services. Due to its superior performance and endless capabilities, Fiber also has the potential to add resale value to homes and communities where it exists.

Since 2013, GVEC.net has been providing FTTH services in La Vernia, and has since expanded into areas of Seguin, Marion, New Braunfels, and Cibolo. As a local provider, we are also equipped to assist area libraries and school districts with exploring the potential of implementing Fiber services under the Federal Communications Commission E-rate Program for discounted telecommunications services (link to https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/universal-service-program-schools-and-libraries-e-rate ). Please help us spreading the word on this offering to your local educational contacts. With this funding, high speed broadband can be accessible in more rural areas, and that will most certainly lend itself to qualify of life for those who call this region home, and work to attract new people, business, and industry to do the same!
