SEGUIN – The City of Seguin and the Seguin Public Library are excited to announce that the new library facility has been awarded LEED Gold status. On Wednesday, August 29th at 9 a.m., city officials and library staff will unveil the LEED plaque displayed near the front doors of the library.

“Anyone who has seen our new library has been impressed with its beauty and function.  Quite often beauty and function are not compatible with energy efficiency.  The LEED certification shows that our city is committed to keeping our energy cost low and giving our library users a wonderful aesthetic experience with the smallest possible effect on the environment,” said Mayor Don Keil.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated to have the least amount of impact to the environment. The City of Seguin achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.  According to USGBS, “LEED Gold buildings consume a quarter less energy and generate 34% lower greenhouse gas emissions”.

“Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices. It represents a commitment to making the world a better place and influencing others to do better,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. "Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, City of Seguin demonstrates their leadership through their LEED certification of the Seguin Public Library.”

The Seguin Public Library is the first building in Seguin to receive a Gold LEED certification. ###  https://www.seguintexas.gov/
